On the 3rd of November, 2019 Benjamin Spartos’ team traveled to Kiryandongo for the 2nd time to deliver support to Aciro, a widow who lost her husband in the 2002 LRA war. They first met Aciro at one of the music sessions at the mental health unit of Gulu regional referral hospital where she was taking care of her son. She is a hero raising her children and grandchildren in a humble home in a remote area in Kiryandongo

In this visit, she received food items that can push her and her family for a few months, some clothes, a phone, a hairdo among others.

The first time we traveled to her home to take support she was so stressed, worried that she showed no emotions. This has mainly been because of the negative treatment from her community members

This second time was an evidence of the progress she is making towards improved mental health. We are so glad to see how happy she was to receive us and how more relaxed and focused she was

All the support she has received has been possible because of a kind individual (name reserved) who has funded both support

Thanks to Joanita Ayenyo for volunteering in organizing and seeing to it that the visit was successful

Our goal is to use the music sessions to heal people facing mental health challenges and lobby for livelihood support for them and bridge the rift between these people and their community

Of you are out there and are wondering how you can support the mental health sector, start by giving more love to your immediate neighbor. A simple ‘hi, have a wonderful day’ or ‘be strong’ or ‘lean on me’ may be the difference between life and death for someone. Don’t underestimate the power of what you have in positive living and community development
